Profile

The Department of Biotechnology was started in the year 1999 with a vision to develop technical manpower in the wide area of biotechnology. It is a "DST-FIST Sponsored Department" and is currently offering B.Tech., M.Tech., MS (by research), and Ph.D. degree programmes in Biotechnology. The department attracts meritorious students for both B.Tech. and M.Tech. Degree programmes. The UG and PG programmes are designed to train the students to become masters who can identify a problem and to solve it through the biotechnological approaches.

Towards this goal, training is given in the wide areas of biotechnology such as tissue culture (animal and plant), fermentation technology and enzyme engineering for chemicals, antibiotics and other product development; utilization of agricultural and forest residues and industrial wastes; genetic engineering, immunology, molecular biology and nanobiotechnology. The department has many laboratories equipped with advanced instruments like Quantitative Real Time PCR, Multimode Detector, G-PCRs, HPLC, GC, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, Fermentor, CO2- and Multigas-incubators, Gel Documentation system, Fluorescent Microscopes, DNA sequencer, Electrophoreter, Plant Growth Chamber, Rotary Evaporator, Biosafety Cabinet (Class II), and facility for animal and plant tissue culture. Several students of this department are employed in reputed organizations / industries and many have gone abroad for their higher studies.

The department is strengthened by 14 well qualified faculty members from diverse fields and specializations. Many of our faculty are trained in abroad and worked in industries / national and international organizations. The faculty members have established research collaboration with scientists working in national and international organization that facilitates the students to pursue their research work at collaborating institutions.

The Department of Biotechnology has a vision to promote and strengthen the research activities in the interdisciplinary fields and number of research projects are dynamically being carried out in the frontier areas like Gene Therapy, Nanobiotechnology, Biomarkers Research, Biofuels, Bioinsecticides, Phytodrugs, and Biosensors. Several research projects for about Rs. 468 lakhs funded by various national funding agencies like DBT, DST, DRDO, ICMR, and UGC are currently carried out by the faculty of this department. These grants immensely help to strengthen our teaching and research both at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. From this department, 10 students have been awarded Ph.D. degree.

Currently, 18 research scholars are pursuing for Ph.D. degree programme in the department and many are awarded with SRF from CSIR, ICMR, MNRE and UGC. Many of our students have won prestigious Common Wealth Fellowship for availing short term fellowship at University of Windsor, Canada and Khorana Program sponsored by DBT, Govt. of India for taking up summer internship at University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, and research funding from TePP-DSIR, and TNSCS&T for their Under Graduate and Post Graduate dissertation works.
