Department of Chemistry

High quality performance in chemical education, research and training.

To contribute quality education in chemical science and technology in compliance with the vision and mission of BIT.

The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1999. The Department of Chemistry has been engaged mainly in the teaching of the courses pertaining to B.E./B.Tech. students.

The department constitutes 13 faculty members who are expertise in frontier level of research. The faculty members are supervising researches and publishing internationally reputed research papers. The entire faculties have had the exposure and scopes to carry out research of preliminary originality contributing genuinely towards the enhancement of academic and industrial interactions. The department also has a Ph.D. programme with around 17 Ph.D. students working under the faculty members with areas of research encompassing all major sub-disciplines of chemistry. The departmental research is funded by various funding agencies and supported by many departmental and institute central facilities. The department also encourages strong link with industrial sponsored research. The department has developed into one of the most productive one in chemistry research.

The following are the major areas of research being conducted in our department.

  • Coordination Chemistry — Synthesis, Characterization and X-ray crystal structure analysis
  • Photochemistry — Photochemical reaction &product analysis
  • Bio-Inorganic Chemistry and Bio-Organic Chemistry
  • Catalysis — Homogeneous and Heterogeneous catalysis
  • Electrochemistry & Corrosion Chemistry
  • Environmental Chemistry — Heavy metal analysis, Industrial waste water treatment
  • Kinetics

The department of chemistry has an excellent teaching programme. In particular, the department is making fundamental contributions to the Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Technology, Petrochemical Technology and Nanoscience& Technology, which are exploding with the opportunity to impact human health. At the B.Tech.level, the department offers laboratory and theory core courses covering basic concepts in various sub-disciplines of chemistry (physical, inorganic, organic). Special lectures on varied topic of academic relevance are held under the Extra Mural Lecture series. The department has B.E/B.Tech. I Year Chemistry lab, Instrumentation lab, Physical Chemistry lab, Organic/Bio-organic Chemistry lab and Research lab, which are well equipped to meet the needs of students. Laboratory mainly serves the purpose of training the graduate and post graduate students in classical and modern experiments of chemistry. Department is equipped with UV-Visible spectrometer, Nephelometer, Conductivity meter, PH-meter, Flame Photometer, Potentiometer, Conductivity meter,Polarimeter and Muffle Furnace.

The academic atmosphere at Campus is a rare blend of modern day technical skills and the traditional emphasis on imparting knowledge. In the development of the department and its research and teaching programmes, international impact and recognition, and national needs, aspirations and relevance have always been the driving forces. The faculty as well as the students who have qualified from the department has always done the country proud through outstanding achievements and leadership qualities.
